Bank holiday weekend, and rather than build cars I went to watch them get destroyed.
I went to watch banger racing at arena Essex.
At the event I went to there were mini stocks which is stock car racing for under 16’s, and lightning rods which are modified Ford Sierras, although to some they may look like scrap they are complex machines which cost a fortune to build. It’s a formula that's taken very serious by the drivers.

This week I’m fitting something that is not only a good style modification, it’s also a good safety modification.
The thing I’m talking about is a xenon headlamp or HID lamps as they are also known.
If you're wondering what they are they are the bluey-white headlights you see on the likes of BMWs and Mercedes coming towards you.
There are kits that allow you to fit these to any car so you can have that look of a more expensive car on older or cheaper cars. And they really are better, too.

This week I decided to try the new wheels that I bought on to my cabriolet to see if they fit, before I send them off for a refurb.

Normally I avoid doing any private jobs on any other cars than Fords, but this time I made an exception because it's for a friend. I'm all heart me.
The one I’m working on is a Beetle-based beach buggy kit car .
The donor car used to build seems to be an earlier model Beetle, and has and old type of ignition system that uses contact breaker points and a condenser

Still waiting for the remaining parts for the Escort Cabriolet, so decided to lower my Escort van in preparation for the RS2000 engine conversion to make it handle better.
Lowering the rear of a Escort van is slightly different to lowering an Escort car as these have coil springs - Escort vans have leaf springs.
After many hours on eBay looking at overpriced RS2000 engines I have found one not too far away from me and, more important, at a bargain price.
The engine comes with many of the other parts I need for the conversion such as the loom, ECU, gearbox, radiator, pipes and a stainless steel exhaust, which on its own is worth what I paid for the lot so I’m pretty pleased.

This week I haven’t had much time to make any progress on my projects, so me being me decided it would be a good idea to start another project.
As mad as it sounds it really has to be done.
What I’m planning to do is upgrade my work horse MK6 Ford Escort van, as seen on Chop Shop. At the moment it has a very sick 1800 diesel engine which has about as much power as a lawnmower! And also has done well over 150,000 miles...
