My Own Car - Fixing My Jeep The Chop Shop Way
March 06 | 09by:Julian Gudgeon
I can’t stand working on my own car as it
doesn’t earn me money. Working on cars all week long and then coming home to
work on your own car is not my idea of fun.
The heating in my jeep has gone and it has
been a year without heating so I thought it was time to investigate.
I’ve got a
2001 model Gran Cherokee Jeep. I had to strip the whole dash out so I could get
to the heater box. This took me and my partner a day and a half and it must
have been over 100 screws holding the dash in. When we got the heater box out,
we stripped it down and found all the flaps inside the box were broken, which
apparently, is a known fault for this model of car.
I rang Chrysler and they said the flaps would cost around £190… for 3 plastic flaps (I bet they’re not feeling the credit crunch!) Whilst I was on the phone to Chrysler, I asked them what they would charge to do a job like this. Their price was £1400 (again, not a victim of the credit crunch!)
So need I say more… I just repaired them.
I think it’s probably one of the worst jobs
I have ever had to do on one of my own cars. But I'm not going to spend £1400, thanks very much.
