XR2 Strip Down
February 06 | 09by:Lee TaylorThis week Danny and I have taken on the task of stripping the XR2 for its restoration.
Major strip downs are something I’m used to doing daily, working in the accident repair industry as a body fitter. So I know it is important to carefully label and store the parts when striping the car as a lot of the parts even as small as clips are now obsolete. Losing them woukd be a nightmare. It's easy to unbolt stuff and think it''l just be there when you need it. But trust me, being careful at the strip down might sound boring, but it saves a lot of trouble later.
With this in mind we started by carefully removing the interior trim from the car i.e. seats, carpets, Dashboard etc.
We then went on to remove the engine and gearbox assembly from the car, which we then stored
in the corner of the workshop. These parts need their own stripping, total
refurbishing, detailing - and to give them more power in between the body restoration. (So, er, not much to do then!)
There were a few dated modifications such as the old TSW wheels which didn’t fit in with the
subtle modified look we are after: we want to use as many genuine ford RS parts form the 80s as possible.
So I decided to put my EBay account to use again to sell the wheels to recoup some of the mod costs.
We managed to get £50 for them which, will go towards the refurbishment on the rare RS Capri wheels that I already had for my car. My brother's now claimed them, but there you go. I don't mind too much as I think they really suit look of the car. Annoying as it is having your bro nick your wheels, you've got to admit they look good on their new home!
