Love Your Tyres - Tyre Care Tips
February 25 | 09by:Danielle McCormick
For a lot of people, tyres are one of the most overlooked parts of their car. People think the engine is king and all other parts must obey! But your tyres are actually the part of the car that connects it to the road and play a huge part in the running of your car. Without them your car would be so uncomfortable you would only be able to drive at around 20 miles an hour and even then it would feel like a PowerPlate session.
Your tyres rotate at a rapid speed across all sorts of surfaces with all sorts of stuff on them. Most people never check their tyres but there are two things you are supposed to do to them regularly.
How To Check Your Tyres
1. Check your tyre pressure
2. Check your tread depth
Not checking your tyre pressure is actually just plain silly if you ask me. Did you ever find an old bike when you were a kid and try and cycle it and find that you couldn't move very far because the tyres were flat or under-inflated? Well, every day millions of people get into their cars with under-inflated tyres and just try and make up for the slack by getting their engines to work harder.
If your car could talk to you it would be puffing and panting saying "Please Master, stop at the next petrol station and pump up your tyres"
Engine working harder = lots of wasted fuel. Simple as that.
Experts reckon the average person would save 10% of their fuel bill if they checked their tyres once a month. To put it another way, if you don't check your tyre pressure next time you are paying Mr Petrol Station guy (or girl), make a mental note that 10% of that money is going to waste because you are too lazy to check your tyre pressure. And petrol stations make it easy for you. Today, nearly every 'air station' on the forecourt is digital, and 'knows' when your tyres are at the right pressure - so it's hard to even over-inflate.
Have I convinced you yet?! Why do you think the government and environmental groups are now doing awareness raising campaigns for it? If everyone in the UK did it regularly we would save billions of CO2 emissions every year. Everyone's a winner.
But even if you are not sure exactly how to check your tyre pressure...come back next time and I will show you how. It's really one of the easiest ways to save motoring money.
OK, I'm stepping off my soap box now ;0)
