The Rules of Owning a Car
February 05 | 09by:Danielle McCormickOk. So what is the "stuff" you are supposed to know about owning a car?
How abour drive it till it breaks down, then get someone to fix it? No. We've got that much clear.
Here are my top rules of the things you should know running your car. Ignore them at your peril!
Rule No 1.
Check your oil and coolant at least once a month.
Your engine has over 10,000 explosions occurring in it every minute and other parts are moving 2,000 times a minute! If you let your engine overheat by not checking your oil and coolant levels you will cause severe (and very expensive) damage to your engine.
Rule No 2.
If you engine shows any sign of overheating – pull over immediately.
Overheating is like your car having a heart attack. You wouldn’t go for a jog if you started having suspicious chest pains now would you? So if you are driving and your temperature gauge hits the red zone stop driving immediately. Then scold yourself for not following Rule no. 1.
Rule No 3.
Check your tyre pressure every month.
Under-inflated tyres waste 10% of your petrol. When you know that, it is just silly not to keep your tyres pumped.
Rule No 4.
Know when your timing belt is supposed to be changed.
Next time you are in your car, open your owner’s manual. Look up “timing belt”, go to the page and see at what mileage your timing belt is supposed to be changed. Make a note of it (maybe a small sticker on the dashboard). When your car is nearing that mileage bring it to your mechanic and tell him your timing belt needs to be changed. After a certain mileage they snap.
Not what you want when driving down a motorway at full speed. Not sure how to check your oil or pump up your tyres? Well come back to my blog shortly and I will show you how!
