Marching soldiers could power gadgets

British researchers are working to produce battery-free packs for ground soldiers that will reduce the load they have to carry by up to 22lbs (10 kilograms).

The project includes developing technology that will power equipment such as torches and radios using energy generated from the flexing knees and stomping feet of the soldiers.

At the core of the system are high-tech piezoelectric transducers which transform mechanical stress into electricity.

Solar blimp attempts Channel flight

A pioneering solar-powered blimp designed by a group of French university students will undertake an English channel crossing in the first manned flight of its kind next month.

The Nephelios has two twin-bladed propellers and semi-flexible photovoltaic panels on top which collect solar energy that powers an electric motor. Its average speed is 25mph.

The eco-friendly aircraft is 72ft long and 18ft in diameter, makes little noise and is aimed at being an alternative to carbon-powered airships.

£9.5m for huge wind farm project

An investment of £9.5 million has been announced by the Government for the wave hub project - a national-grid connected socket on the seabed off the coast of Cornwall.

Expected to create more than 1,800 jobs, the wave hub was given the go ahead from South West Regional Development Agency. It will be the world's largest wave farm.

The investment comes as newly-published government plans say that a world centre for wave and tidal energy is to be made of the South West of England.

Old law inspires 'green' coffins

A West Yorkshire company that wanted to expand its business by creating an eco-friendly product has found inspiration from a 17th century law governing burials.

Textiles firm Hainsworth has launched a range of biodegradable coffins which are made from pure new wool or heavy organic cotton supported on a strong, recycled cardboard frame.

Innovators from across the globe have gathered in Manchester to discuss groundbreaking plans to reduce climate change.

One proposal was to fill parts of the Sahara desert with mirrors to create clean energy, while another plan was to make livestock behave like herds of wildebeest to trap carbon.

Wind farms 'can power UK homes'

A new UK government assessment has concluded that offshore wind energy has the potential to power every household in the UK.

An additional 25 gigawatts of electricity - which can light up almost 19 million homes in the UK - could be generated from offshore wind, according to the Government's strategic environmental assessment (Sea).

Stormont Energy Minister Arlene Foster has launched a bio-marine energy research project to find ways of converting seaweed and marine algae into a green fuel of future.

A £5-million BioMara project has been set up to discover an alternative method of producing bio-fuels without using food crops.

People-powered Sainsbury's opens

Sainsbury's is opening its first "people-powered" supermarket in Gloucester, capturing the energy from customers` vehicles to power its checkouts.

It is the first store in Europe to use the technology which uses kinetic road plates positioned in the car park.

China calls a halt to dam project

Construction of two hydropower dams in China has been suspended after the country`s environment ministry said the projects were illegal as they lacked the necessary environmental checks.

The dams in the upper Yangtze River region are part of a multibillion-pound project of hydropower stations in south-west China, which environmentalists have argued would damage the area's biodiversity.
