Gold hoard 'worth seven-figure sum'

Experts believe that the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in Britain is worth a "seven-figure sum".

Metal detector enthusiast Terry Herbert, 55, came across the cache buried in a field in south Staffordshire in July.

Consisting of at least 1,345 items made of gold and silver, it has been termed "a fantastically important discovery" and officially declared treasure. A panel of experts is due to value the hoard.

Dr Roger Bland, head of portable antiquities and treasure at the British Museum, said: "I can't say anything other than we expect it to be a seven-figure sum."

He told an inquest in Cannock that the discovery was "at least as significant as any of the major discoveries of this period that have been made in the past".

Speaking at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, archaeologist Dr Kevin Leahy said the hoard was unlike anything the experts have seen before.

He added: "These are the best craftsmen the Anglo Saxons have got, working with the best materials, and producing incredible results."

South Staffordshire coroner Andrew Haigh said: "This is a magnificent find, both in terms of its content and its likely history."
